Jois dan Sang Malaikat
Posted on January 14th, 2010 No commentsCerpen Lily Yulianti Farid
Langit Stockholm runtuh dibuatnya.

Ariel and the Ads of Sunsilk Shampoo
Posted on December 29th, 2009 No commentsNowadays, advertisement is something important to the mostly of mass media, especially television. As the media that combine sound and visual matter, television become the most effective place to inform people about something (widyatama, 2005). The ads supports the television station by sponsoring some programs provided. As the compensation, the company or institution that pays certain television station to put their ads on it will get more customers who see the ads. Moreover, the advertiser also makes the ads as attractive as possible, and one of the tricks is by using a celebrity or public figure as the model (warto, 2007). This strategy is used to construct a certain image toward the product (suasana, 2001). However, there is also some deviation which is used by the advertiser to strengthen the message from the commercial. One of the recent examples can be seen at the Sunsilk shampoo ads. Instead of using perfect woman as the main figure, this ads brings the handsome vocalist Ariel Peterpan. This tactic must have particular reason to increase the product selling indeed. In this essay, we will see the effect of the ads in constructing the gender identity to woman as the main consumer of the product, and also, How Ariel as the main figure impact the women position in gender relationship.

Universitas Indonesia Turns to a Liberal Arts College?
Posted on December 22nd, 2009 1 commentIn recent years, there is an issue in Indonesian academic to apply the Liberal Arts Education method in universities. This idea comes among the lot of criticisms toward the national education system. Some people say that our current curriculum or system does not build the students to be well-rounded person. School or college are considered just teaching one major, and forces the student to become experts in that place without mastering the other things. Also, they believe that students can not only take a number of classes which are directly related to the student’s career goal. They argue that Students should also study other lectures outside the major. It’s aimed to create students who are able to do multitasking job, so they will always be ready whatever the field is. The Rector of Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri, also has an interest on the Liberal Arts method. Just after the inauguration of being the rector of Universitas Indonesia, he stated his intention to apply the method in the university. However, we also need to consider the objective of Liberal Art Education with the demand of the global world toward the skillful workers nowadays. This essay will discuss whether the Liberal Arts education is still relevant to be applied in Universitas Indonesia as the first class university in Indonesia by considering the job competition, educational fund, and the human resources availability.

What Does Woman Achieve from Her Body?
Posted on December 18th, 2009 1 commentNowadays, advertisement is something important to the mostly of mass media. It supports the mass media by sponsoring them to keep in circulation. As the compensation, the company or institution that pays certain mass media to put their ads on it will get more customers who see the ads. Moreover, the advertiser also makes the ads as attractive as possible, and one of the tricks is by using woman as the model. This is a common phenomenon in our advertising world. The advertiser often uses Woman as the model even though the product is not aimed to woman kind. Some feminist consider this as the form of woman exploitation, because the company “sell” the woman’s body to market the product. However, Woman’s body exploitation could also give woman any benefits such as the freedom to express themselves, access the public area, get a better finance, and build the gender equality between man and woman.

Finding New Home
Posted on November 1st, 2009 No commentsPerhaps you are a person who is getting bored with your society and country. Actually, this condition is often occurring among Indonesian people. The messiness, untidiness, and the hypocrisy bring people to the peak where they want to leave this country as soon as possible. However, to migrate to another country or continent, you must learn the language and custom first, except if you decide to move to mars or moon. Furthermore, learning the language is not enough at all. Sometimes some misunderstandings occur while communicating with the locals who have extremely different cultural background with us. One of the trick is by mastering the body language, and seeing any similarities and differencies between them. Therefore, let’s take two countries which come from different continent to review. On this essay, I’ll choose Russia which is located at Europ, and Egypt in Africa. Although they absolutely have different location, we’ll see whether both people still have some similarities in their body languages or not including the spatial concept, gender relationship, and dinning ethic which will be our consideration to deciding new home.
